Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...
Harambe has announced their
CyberPlate
featuring rollers.
I am sure it will be nicely made, but their design has limitations.
- Brushed stainless steel makes for a slippery surface. We use textured wood panels
for better grip.
- The rollers along the long edge are likely to get in trouble at their 1000 lbs
load rating.
- As far as I can tell, they use UHMWPE rollers on polished stainless steel pins
as sleeve bearings. Smooth and quiet, but with a friction coefficient of 0.1 to 0.15
I would not claim "near zero friction". With a band resistance of 100 lbs, this
adds about 10 to 15 lbs of resistance to the concentric movement, and reduces the
eccentric resistance by 10 to 15 lbs. Ball bearings as used in the band box may be
more noisy, but can have a friction coefficient of 0.001 to 0.0015
(TWO orders of magnitude less, "more slippery than Goblin Snot").
Eccentric resistance is valuable for hypertrophy.
- Their design does not support center pull for belt squats, or pinning the band
in place for one arm rows.
- Looking at the demo video, the band is going slack at the bottom of the deadlift,
as their foot plate does not allow shortening the band like the band box does.
Resistance in the stretched position is good for hypertrophy...
- Their quoted price is $499. The total system cost including bar and bands is
MUCH higher than for the band box including all accessories.
- They announced 2025 availability. We are shipping now.
